مها
A desert house at the edge of the dunes, where the day ends slowly and the stars do the rest.
An old halt on the caravan road, kept by the same family and slowly made into somewhere to stay. There is a spring here, which is the only reason anything stands in this much open ground.
The rooms are stone and canvas. The water is cold and clear. The kitchen cooks over fire and serves late, and no one minds how long you sit. We keep twelve rooms and no more, so the desert stays the loudest thing around.
We took the name from the oryx, the pale desert animal that was nearly lost and then brought back. It seemed right for a place that was almost let go, and was not.

Thick walls that hold the cool of the night well past noon. A low bed, one lamp, and very little else. The quietest room we keep.

The largest, set beside the spring with its own shaded court and a small plunge pool. For a longer stay, or a stay worth marking.

Out here the dark is not a thing to get through. It is the reason you came.

An astronomer joins the camp on clear nights. The telescope comes out once the last lamp is dimmed, and stays out as long as you do.

Dinner is cooked over fire and served late, on rugs, under the open sky.

A guide walks you out before dawn, while the sand is still cold and the light is low and long.

A natural spring feeds the pool and the garden. It is the reason a house stands out here at all.
Where
In the open desert, by the old caravan road. Far enough out that the sky is properly dark.
Arrival
A driver meets you at the regional airfield and brings you the last stretch. Roughly 90 minutes, the last of it off the road.
